A new report by the British Medical Journal says that bike-sharing saves lives.
The study looked at bike-sharers in Barcelona, Spain, and found that “12.46 deaths were avoided” as a result of bicyclers’ increased physical activity, and about 9 million kilograms (nearly 20 million pounds) of carbon dioxide didn’t make it to the air because the bicyclers decided against cars.
The study is being touted by Arlington County as evidence that the Capital Bike Share program is good for health and the environment. Arlington and Washington, are currently expanding the bikesharing program with more stations and bikes.
