ELGIN, Ill. (AP) — A man armed with a handgun has been arrested near a wastewater treatment facility northwest of Chicago.
Elgin police responded after 911 callers reported a possible hostage situation and said a man was attempting to shut down water equipment.
The incident took place Wednesday at the Fox River Water Reclamation District facility.
Police spokesman Cmdr. Dan O’Shea says officers fired a “less lethal ammunition round” when the man refused to surrender. O’Shea described the round as being similar to a rubber bullet.
The suspect was arrested and taken to a hospital.
O’Shea said it was not immediately clear whether there was an actual hostage.
