Matt Damon: Millennials are better, more ‘responsible’ than Gen-X

Young fans of hearthrob Matt Damon may have even more of a reason to like him now. As GQ mentioned about the talk they had with the actor, he’s got “an unpopular opinion” in that “Damon Prefers Millennials to Generation X,” his own generation.

Damon believes “this generation seems so much more dialed-in than mine,” and praised millennials specifically for their “humanist awareness” compared to Generation Xers. He continued, with an additional note from GQ:

“The rap on Generation X was that we were disaffected and thought the world owed us something. That’s very different than what you get today, which is people feel connected to things that are going on on the other side.” In his generation’s defense, he said he couldn’t be sure if it was a generational change, or if technology simply helped everyone remain more connected.

Damon himself is an activist. While at Sundance, which is where he spoke with GQ, he advocated his charity, Water.org. And he had quite the bit to say about the Flint water crisis, as well as similar circumstances around the world.  “That’s the reality for 660 million people around the world every day. This is one of the first cases, at least in my mind, where Americans are thinking about the critical importance of clean water,” he mentioned.

He also related it to a generational take on such concerns, and even spoke about end of the world scenarios:

Will that sense of environmental responsibility change how people think about generational legacies? “Problems seem so much bigger,” Damon explained. “You hear these end-of-world scenarios that I don’t think our parents heard. You wonder, is there going to be a world? If so, what kind of world is it going to be that my generation is leaving behind to the next generation?”

Did Matt Damon appeal himself to millennials even more with his activism as well? It’s quite possible.
