Jeff Sessions: US not prepared for future Russia interference

Attorney General Jeff Sessions said Wednesday the U.S. is not doing enough to prepare for future Russian election interference.

“Probably not, we’re not,” Sessions told Sen. Ben Sasse, R-Neb., during questioning before the Senate Intelligence Committee, adding, “The matter is so complex that for most of us were not able to fully grasp the technical dangers that are out there.”

The U.S. intelligence committee has concluded the Russian government engaged in interference during the 2016 presidential election.

Sessions added the Russian “misinformation campaign is not something I think we’re to the bottom of.”

When asked if the U.S. is prepared to prevent future interference, Sessions offered a solemn assessment.

“Are we at the level we need to be at? I don’t think so.”

Earlier during his appearance, Sessions told Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, D-R.I., said the Justice Department’s National Security Division is overseeing those efforts to bulk up against future Russia attacks.

“I’ll be frank. I don’t know that we’re doing a specific legislative review at this point,” Sessions said.

When asked by Whitehouse if it would be prudent to do so, Session said that is a “suggestion,” and that he would be “glad to discuss” it with the senator.
