The Washington Examiner will outsource its printing to Vertis Company, which has a plant in Belcamp the prints The Baltimore Examiner, and FNP Inc., a subsidiary of The Frederick News-Post, in Frederick, the newspaper announced Monday.
Examiner Publisher Michael Phelps said the newspaper’s existing Virginia plant was no longer state-of-the-art and would be closed.
He said it was not economically feasible to upgrade the facility because modern printing plants had been developed to serve multiple publications.
Phelps said outsourcing will reduce costs and make it possible to print more full-color pages.
“The sad reality of this change,” said Phelps, “is that we will lose 101 excellent employees now working for us at Pickett Street.”
The transition is scheduled to be completed by the end of January.
“We wanted to make sure the plant employees would continue working through the holiday season,” Phelps said. “We’re going to do our best to help them find new jobs.”
The paper is owned by Denver-based Clarity Media Inc., which launched The Baltimore Examiner in 2006, a year after purchasing the former suburban-D.C. Journal Newspapers and converting them into The Washington Examiner.
