Oil and gas industry trolls North Face with ad accusing it of hypocrisy after company refuses to make jackets for fossil fuel company

The oil and gas industry is pushing back with an ad campaign against outdoor clothing company North Face and accusing it of hypocrisy after the company refused to fulfill an order for an oil company over ideological disagreements.

The controversy started last year when North Face declined to create jackets for Texas oil and gas company Innovex Downhole Solutions, arguing that the oil company didn’t align with its brand standards.

In response, Chris Wright, CEO of Denver-based Liberty Oilfield Services, launched the ad campaign dubbed “Thank you, North Face,” which points out how many North Face products are made using oil and gas.

“I went through North Face’s website of wide-ranging products, and I failed to find a single product that wasn’t made out of oil and gas,” Wright says in the video. “The great majority of North Face’s products, jackets, backpacks, outdoor pants, shirts, shoes, hats, etc. are predominantly made out of the oil and gas that we so proudly produce.”

Wright says in the video that 60% of clothing produced globally is made using oil and gas, but the number is likely 90% or more for North Face.

Fossil fuels are necessary to make the petrochemicals that are used in plastics, nylon, climbing ropes, and other North Face products, Wright says. Additionally, oil and gas are needed to fuel factories that manufacture goods and are used to ship the products worldwide.

“North Face is not only an extraordinary customer of the oil and gas industry,” Wright says. “They are also a partner in the oil and gas industry.”
