USA TODAY — Journalists could soon see more protection with a federal media shield law reintroduced in Congress last week.
However, it could leave student journalists out in the cold.

Pushed by the White House, the Free Flow of Information Act (originally introduced in 2009), was added to the legislative agenda last Wednesday. Two separate versions of the bill — Senate Bill 987 and House Resolution 1962 — are working their way through the House of Representatives and the Senate.
The move for a federal statute comes as a result of the Justice Department’s seizure of the Associated Press’ phone records. A coalition of journalists pressured the Obama administration through a letter to Deputy Attorney General James Cole questioning how “this unparalleled use of your investigative power is constitutionally consistent.”
