GEISMAR, La. (AP) — BASF personnel will conduct an investigation to determine what led to the injury of four contractors doing routine maintenance at the company’s Ascension Parish plant.

Jolen Stein, spokeswoman for the BASF chemical facility in Geismar, tells The Advocate (http://bit.ly/10GjkjI ) the workers, certified electricians employed by Turner Industries, received first- and second-degree burns that were not life-threatening after an “electrical incident” about 11 a.m. Monday.

Stein did not identify the workers.

She said the electricians were working on the plant’s power distribution system, which is not part of any specific unit but serves the entire 700-acre complex on the Mississippi River.

Stein said the root-cause analysis would help to determine if the incident is reportable to the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration and to prevent a future such incident from happening.
