NEW YORK (AP) — A company hired to grade standardized tests in New York City’s public schools is in danger of losing its contract after a pair of scoring errors led to thousands of kids being wrongly ruled ineligible for programs for gifted students.
Department of Education Chancellor Dennis Walcott said Friday that the education and publishing company Pearson had failed to meet “basic quality assurance” standards in its handling of the city’s eligibility tests.

Three weeks ago, the city said it had raised the scores of nearly 5,000 students who had initially been knocked out of gifted programs because of the company’s mistakes.
On Friday the city said it discovered more errors affecting an additional 300 students.
Pearson has apologized for both incidents.
