Caps outshot Carolina 14-4 in the first period. But goalie Cam Ward was excellent and the Canes took advantage of a few odd-man rushes. Jiri Tlusty scored at 2:01, finishing a 2-on-1. Tlusty was just acquired from Toronto in a trade last week. It was the 11th NHL goal for the 21-year-old, who was traded for Philippe Paradis, and his first this season. Eric Staal added the second goal on a wraparound attempt at 13:53. Jose Theodore probably should have had that one. Mike Green was on the ice for both Carolina goals – though the first one ha had been drilled up high in the offensive play and had no chance to get back into the play.
