The Prince George’s County fire department received a multi-million dollar grant to hire 18 new firefighters.
The department was awarded $2.59 million by the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response program, a congressional grant to help address pressing staffing and equipment needs for fire services.
The 18 firefighters the department now plans to hire are in addition to the 70 new firefighter positions approved in the county’s fiscal 2013 budget. The department plans to deploy those new firefighters to Prince George’s busiest stations.
It’s the second grant the county’s received through the program in two years.
