House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., said she is hoping to work out a deal with the Trump administration on lifting spending caps in time for a vote next week.
Pelosi has been in daily talks by phone with Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin and the two are close to a deal.
The House and Senate need a caps deal in order to pass spending bills for the 2020 fiscal year that starts Oct. 1.
The Senate is weeks behind on spending legislation.
Pelosi said final numbers would have to be secured by Friday in order to provide enough time for House lawmakers to consider it by Thursday.
Congress is eager to reach a two-year deal to lift caps imposed by the 2011 Budget Control Act. If left in place, it would require slashing billions in both domestic and military spending.
A deal hinges on Pelosi and Mnuchin.
She told reporters Wednesday she is seeking additional funding for veterans for newly created programs.
“Our concern is that the additional initiatives that have been added for veterans have become the law, and we need to cover them,” Pelosi said.
