LOS ANGELES (AP) — A man believed to have carried out a series of assaults aboard Metro buses in Los Angeles County was arrested Friday, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies arrested Hector Resendez, 24, in Huntington Park, a small city east of downtown Los Angeles, Deputy Quiana Birkbeck said.
The arrest followed reports of two attacks earlier in the day that appeared to be related to a series of assaults aboard buses that began June 16.
Deputies allege Resendez used a screwdriver Friday to stab two people in the throat aboard two buses in different parts of Los Angeles. The victims from Friday’s attacks have non-life threatening injuries, Cmdr. Ronene Anda said.
Several law enforcement units mobilized to track down Resendez, who was arrested “without incident,” Anda said.
“This is a very rare occurrence,” said Anda, reiterating the safety of public transit.
It’s unclear what motivated the attacks.
The Sheriff’s Department patrols Metro transit lines.
