Elderly woman killed by own van at church
An elderly woman on her way to church was killed when she was struck by her own vehicle.
Police said 86-year-old Marie Surowics pulled her van into the parking lot at St. Edward the Confessor Catholic Church in Bowie about 11:30 a.m. Sunday.
Surowics, of Bowie, exited the driver’s side door but failed to put the van in park, police said.
The van rolled backward and the open door knocked the woman to the ground.
7-year-old sought in McDonald’s robbery
D.C. police are looking for a 7-year-old boy who robbed a customer at a McDonald’s restaurant.
It happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the McDonald’s in the 4300 block of Nannie Helen Burroughs Ave. SE.
A group of young males between the ages of 7 and 14 approached a customer and got into a verbal altercation. The customer took out his cell phone to call police and one of the young males snatched his phone and fled.
Woman charged with felony child neglect
A Prince William County woman has been charged with felony child neglect after an unconscious baby was taken to an area hospital, police said Monday.
Police responded to the Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center in Woodbridge on Thursday for a report of an unconscious baby. The 5-month-old girl had sustained internal injuries, police said.
Detectives said a relative of the baby squeezed the victim tightly several times because it was crying and forcibly put the baby into her bed. Later in the day, the victim became unresponsive.
Monique Coachman, 20, of Triangle, was charged with aggravated malicious wounding and felony child abuse.
The baby remained in critical condition Monday, police said.
