FCC approves contentious net neutrality plan

POLITICO — The Federal Communications Commission on Thursday approved Chairman Tom Wheeler’s controversial net neutrality proposal in a 3-2 vote, setting in motion the agency’s latest effort to ensure an open Internet.

Net neutrality refers to the principle that Internet providers should not block or slow certain websites. But Wheeler’s proposal sparked a firestorm of criticism for allowing providers like AT&T and Verizon to charge companies like Google and Facebook for an Internet “fast lane” to deliver content, provided such deals are “commercially reasonable.”
