Steve Eldridge: Sobering stats from the Fourth

The good people at the Washington Regional Alcohol Program tell me that 179 people took advantage of the free cab rides offered as part of the SoberRide program during the Fourth of July holiday. That’s almost 180 people who had too much to drink and DIDN’T get behind the wheel. It may not sound like a huge number, but every one of those persons was a potential crash and a potential fatality that didn’t happen. I think that’s something to be commended.

SmarTrip suggestions

Don writes: “Forget the express lanes for SmarTrip users. Forget adding Spanish language on the fare machines. The single most important item that Metro can do to improve the quality of my daily commute would be to allow the SmarTrip to be automatically charged the way EZPass is … Metro has made huge strides upgrading more of their fare machines to accept SmarTrip cards and allowing credit card usage, but getting it online would be ideal. You could check your balance and usage, set thresholds as to when to add more money and how much to add each time.”
