‘Jeff Flake is better!’: Trump calls for impeaching ‘fool’ Romney as he slams senator

Continuing his daylong rage against Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, President Trump sent out a fiery tweet calling for the senator’s impeachment in an all-caps hashtag, “#IMPEACHMITTROMNEY,” on Saturday afternoon.

Trump also responded to Fox News White House correspondent Kevin Corke’s tweet questioning if Romney is “the new” Jeff Flake, the former Arizona senator of whom Trump has historically been critical.

“Question of the afternoon… Has #MittRomney become the new #JeffFlake or is the latest back and forth much ado about nothing? #QOTD,” Corke tweeted.

“No Kevin, Jeff Flake is better!” Trump said in an energetic response.

Although a Republican, Flake was often at odds with Trump before his retirement from the Senate at the end of 2018. Most notably, he withheld a vote in the Senate Judiciary Committee to send the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the Senate floor after being cornered in an elevator by anti-Kavanaugh protesters. More recently, from life outside public service, Flake has suggested that nearly three dozen Senate Republicans would vote to convict the president if they could do so in private and said, “Fellow Republicans, there’s still time to save your souls,” in a Washington Post op-ed.

“I’m hearing that the Great People of Utah are considering their vote for their Pompous Senator, Mitt Romney, to be a big mistake,” Trump wrote. “I agree! He is a fool who is playing right into the hands of the Do Nothing Democrats! #IMPEACHMITTROMNEY.”

Trump’s afternoon slam of Romney was a continuation of several remarks on Twitter earlier in which Trump referred to the first-term senator as a “pompous ass,” who “choked” during his 2012 presidential bid and begged Trump for a Senate endorsement and to be secretary of state.

Trump’s angry lash against Romney on Saturday seemed to be a direct reaction to Romney’s Friday tweet that offered no confidence in the president.

“When the only American citizen President Trump singles out for China’s investigation is his political opponent in the midst of the Democratic nomination process, it strains credulity to suggest that it is anything other than politically motivated,” Romney said of Trump’s recent comments regarding an investigation by Ukraine and China into Joe Biden and his son Hunter. “By all appearances, the President’s brazen and unprecedented appeal to China and to Ukraine to investigate Joe Biden is wrong and appalling.”
