PASCAGOULA, Miss. (AP) — Organizers of a maritime museum expect to take ownership next week of two buildings on the old Pascagoula High School campus as a temporary home.
Mississippi Maritime and Warship Museum leaders say they will take over the math/science building and the band hall.
After that is done, organizers will begin locating and restoring the artifacts and memorabilia that will fill the interim museum.
The ultimate goal is to bring the Ingalls-built Ticonderoga home to Lowry Island, where a new museum building would be constructed. A land-based museum is Phase One of the plan.
It will cost more than $30 million to bring the Ticonderoga ship to Jackson County.
The ship was built in the 1980s at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula.
