Lindsey Graham: Trump ‘on the right road’ on guns

Sen. Lindsey Graham said Thursday that while he is not supporting Donald Trump, the presumed Republican presidential nominee is right when it comes to gun control.

“I want to applaud Mr. Trump. I think he’s [going] to the middle on something that’s very important,” the South Carolina Republican said on Fox News Thursday morning.

Graham added that the key issue on terror attacks is not he guns themselves, but failed intelligence policies imposed by President Obama.

“So that’s where Mr. Trump is going,” the former 2016 presidential hopeful explained. “Mr. Trump is on the right road to trying to find the middle ground. If you’re on a no-fly list, if you’ve been selected for extra screening because of your behavior, you present a danger or a threat, then I don’t think you should be able to buy a gun, but you should have a way to challenge the government’s accusation against you.”

When asked if this means he will be working alongside Trump as the general election cycle churns into the summer, Graham said instead that he is worried about his party.

“I worry a lot about the GOP,” Graham said. “I worry that the GOP is cutting its own throat by doubling on the idea that we’ll deport all illegal immigrants, including grandmothers that have done nothing but be here to try to earn a life.”

But this doesn’t mean he’s ready to support presumed Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton, either.

“I’m so sorry we are where we are, but as to Hillary Clinton, if you vote for her, you’ll continue the failed policies,” Graham said. “Her approach to the war on terror is no different than Barack Obama. Donald Trump is showing some willingness to move. And all I can say to Mr. Trump, you’re on the right path here, my friend. When it comes to making sure guns don’t fall into the hands of the people that can’t fly on airplanes. That makes a lot of sense to me.”
