Federal prosecutors said a man awaiting sentencing for a 2008 murder stabbed a fellow D.C. jail inmate days before he was to learn his punishment.

The jailhouse stabbing occurred on Jan. 7, six days before Charles Elegalam was to be sentenced for the murder of Jason Fennell and the attempted murder of Fennell’s brother.

Prosecutors said Elegalam stabbed the victim nine times after the victim tried to prevent Elegalam and others from engaging in violence. The man who was stabbed survived the attack.

Prosecutors said the stabbing undercuts any claim that Elegalam was remorseful about the previous attacks. He was sentenced Tuesday to nearly 68 years in prison.
