Poll: Voters more confident in Clinton after DNC

Voters are more confident in Hillary Clinton’s ability to handle most issues, and less confident in Donald Trump, according to a new poll taken after the Democratic National Convention.

Fifty-nine percent believe Clinton would have a better handle on foreign policy, and just 36 percent think Trump would be better suited, according to a new CNN/ORC poll released Tuesday. For Clinton, that’s a 9 point gain since the last poll, conducted after the GOP’s convention and before the Democrats’ event.

Voters are also more confident in her ability to deal with immigration, terrorism and the economy. She gained 6 or 7 percent in each of these categories compared to the prior poll.

Between the two polls, voters’ confidence in Trump has dropped across the board.

Clinton also beats Trump when it comes to gun policy, healthcare, race relations, the Islamic State, criminal justice system and violence against police officers — all issues which voters became more confident in Clinton’s ability to handle following the conventions. Confidence in Trump dropped for all those issues.

The telephone-based poll was conducted July 29-31 — the DNC concluded July 28 — surveying 894 registered voters. It carries a margin of error of plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
