The Marine Base at Quantico is taking its first steps in preparing for the 2,600 new people coming to the base as part of the Department of Defense recommendations.
Environmental studies for a new 700,000-square-foot campus situated west of Interstate 95 and a business plan are in the works, officials said.
Criminal investigative services and the support staff for all of the armed forces and DOD and training grounds will be moving to Quantico by September 2011, said John Rosewarne, director of Quantico’s Business Performance Office. The majority of the positions coming to the base are civilian and contractor jobs.
“Most of the people who are coming to Quantico are in the national capital region,” said Rosewarne, although he doesn’t expect to get finalized information until 2010.
An administrative building, a training facility, schools, a warehouse and a guard house are included in the base’s conceptual plans, said Meredith Carrington, project manager.
Quantico’s plans are minimal compared to the Army’s plans for Fort Belvoir at the Prince William County border on I-95. Fort Belvoir has several locations to consider within the base and engineering proving grounds to place its nearly 22,000 relocated jobs.
“The big issue with both places is transportation,” said Dana Fenton, Prince William County director of Legislative Affairs, who added the Stafford County entrance for Quantico at Russell Road must be prepared to handle the influx of new workers.
Rosewarne said that Russell Road will be widened west of I-95. Prince William and Stafford counties have formed a work group to discuss issues, such as the effect of the additional traffic, he said.
