Rep. Tom Massie, R-Ky., one of the conservative lawmakers who is not supporting the Republican bill to repeal and replace Obamacare, said Tuesday that President Trump is getting bad information about how the bill he supports would affect healthcare.
“I support our president but in my judgement he’s receiving bad advice on the negative consequences of this legislation with respect to the cost of health care,” Massie wrote on Facebook shortly after he met with Trump on Capitol Hill.
“Furthermore, he’s been mislead about the political implications of this bill and even the likelihood of its passage Thursday,” he added.
Trump met with conservatives in the morning, but failed to win enough over to ensure the House can pass the bill. Trump was trying to set up a White House meeting Tuesday afternoon to keep at it.
His moves come even after several changes were made to the House bill aimed at getting more conservatives on board. The new version speeds up the elimination of taxes under Obamacare, and gives states more options when it comes to how they spend federal Medicaid funds.
But Massie and others say it’s not enough.
“President Trump spoke to us this morning in a private GOP meeting,” Massie wrote. “He’s considerably more charming and intelligent than the media would lead you to believe. I’m still voting no on Obamacare-lite this Thursday.”
Massie said he’s getting an average of 30 calls a day about the bill, and said “zero” support it.
