District’s West End development nears approval

A highly anticipated redevelopment of the D.C. Public Library and Fire Station in West End is up for final approval before the city zoning commission next week. The hearing is an extension of one that began earlier in December and is expected to wrap up testimony regarding the mixed-use development by Stanton EastBanc.

Joe Sternlieb, vice president, acquisitions for Stanton EastBanc, told The Washington Examiner on Thursday that the zoning board could vote at the conclusion of next Thursday’s hearing on the project. If the board issues a bench approval, the project could break ground this year following the permitting process. The new library and fire station would have housing unit above the main floors.

The West End development on L Street between 23rd and 24th streets NW is a partnership between the developer and the District. Designs were unveiled in May and generally regarded  among D.C.’s architectual community as refreshing and ambitious.
