The D.C. Council is considering regulating the tattoo and body-piercing industry with a bill that would establish health and education standards. The legislation, which is being discussed Wednesday, would also require tattoo and body-piercing artists to be licensed.
If passed, the proposal — now before the Committee on Public Services and Consumer Affairs — would mark the first time the industry would be subject to regulations in the city.
Among those scheduled to testify are Dr. Gary Simon, the director of the Division of Infectious Diseases at George Washington Medical Faculty Associates, and the owners of four tattoo parlors in the District.
