Alexandria city hall to get “green roof”

Alexandria’s 19th-century City Council building will soon be going green.

The city will install a vegetative “green roof” on the east and west courtyards of City Hall, which are visible from the second floor. In addition to being easy on the eyes, the plants will be good for the environment, reduce energy costs and reduce stormwater runoff, city officials said.

Funding for the roof comes from federal stimulus money for conservation programs.
