D.C.’s boxing hearing leaves Khan promoters wary

Golden Boy Promotions officials said a D.C. Council committee hearing billed as one that would air out the controversy surrounding the recent championship boxing bout in the District only made them more skeptical of doing business in the city.

“We constantly hear things about D.C. politics — rumors — and it’s never flattering,” Arnold Joseph, the attorney for Golden Boy told The Washington Examiner. “If you want to expand [private] business here you can’t have things like this happen. … You have to have transparency. And you have to make people believe that when you come, you’re not going to get home-towned.”

Joseph and Golden Boy Chief Operating Officer David Itskowitch testified at a hearing held Friday by the council’s committee on the city boxing commission’s performance during the December match at the Verizon Center in which D.C. native Lamont Peterson beat then-champ Amir Khan in a split decision for the World Boxing Association and International Boxing Federation light-welterweight titles. Golden Boy represents Khan.
