A 27-year-old Oxon Hill man was arrested in connection with a shoot-out with a Takoma Park police officer and a subsequent taking of a hostage.

Montgomery County police said Trevlyn Terrell Hinton was charged with attempted first-degree murder, two counts of attempted first- degree assault and use of a handgun in a crime of violence.  He is being held without bond at the Montgomery County Detention Center.

About 11:35 a.m. Thursday, a Takoma Park Police officer in the area of Sligo Creek Parkway and Houston Avenue attempted to pull over a late model black Camaro after he saw the car speeding and endangering pedestrians, police said.

The Camaro sped off and a pursuit was initiated, police said. The Camaro struck a pole in the parking lot of East Spring Elementary School. The driver bailed out and ran behind the school and into the Thayer Terrace Apartments complex in Silver Spring, police said.

At some point, the suspect drew a gun and shots were exchanged between the suspect and the officer. No one was struck or injured. Just as the suspect was next to a side entrance to the apartment building, an adult male came out of the building.  He was grabbed by the suspect and held as a shield. The officer ordered the man to release the hostage. The suspect complied and he was taken into custody without further incident.

The Takoma Park Police officer involved in this incident is a 10-year veteran of the department. He has been placed on administrative leave through the course of the investigation.
