A hotel at the New York resort that inspired the film Dirty Dancing was demolished after a fire destroyed it Tuesday night.
Grossinger’s Catskill Resort Hotel in Liberty, New York, caught flame just after 7 p.m., with the cause being unknown to the New York State Police and the Sullivan County Bureau of Fire.
“While enroute, multiple calls into Sullivan 911 reported a large structure on fire at the old Grossingers Hotel property,” Liberty Fire Department’s Facebook post read. “A smoke column was now visible for several miles. First arriving units had to cut through a gate in order to access the roadway to get to the fire. Upon reaching the fire it was found to be a 3 ½ story building that was now well involved.”

The hotel has been closed since 1986, which meant the property was overgrown and there were concrete barriers on the roadway. Firefighters also had to cut through a locked gate to get to the fire.
“At the request of Town of Liberty Code Enforcement, an excavator was brought into the scene to knock down the structure once the fire was out,” the Liberty Fire Department said.

At its height, the resort had a 27-hole golf course, indoor and outdoor pools, a nightclub, two kosher kitchens, and had hundreds of thousands of visitors per year. It was in operation for over 70 years.

Dirty Dancing was actually filmed at the Mountain Lake Lodge in Pembroke, Virginia, which was not destroyed in the fire.
