Poll: More than 50 percent Republicans support Trump nationally

Nearly six in 10 Republicans now support Donald Trump, according to a new national poll.

The Republican presidential front-runner has the support of 56 percent of GOP voters, according to a new national NBC News|SurveyMonkey poll released Tuesday. Texas Sen. Ted Cruz and Ohio Gov. John Kasich are both far behind, with 22 percent and 14 percent, respectively. Another 7 percent are undecided.

In the same poll one month ago, the day of the Wisconsin primary, Trump’s lead over Cruz was just 3 points.

On the Democratic side, Hillary Clinton leads Bernie Sanders nationally by 14 points, 54 percent to 40 percent. Six percent are undecided.

The survey of 14,640 U.S. adults was conducted April 25 to May 1, and included 12,462 registered voters (+/- 1.2 percentage points), 3,479 registered Republican voters (+/-2.2 percentage points) and 4,418 registered Democratic voters (+/-1.9 percentage points).
