First lady Michelle Obama said she’s surprisingly emotional about leaving the White House next week.
During her appearance on “The Tonight Show,” host Jimmy Fallon asked if she’s getting emotional from all the goodbyes.
“I feel like crying right now,” Obama responded. “And I didn’t think that it was going to be that emotional, because it’s like, yeah, we’re ready.”
Obama has frequently said she’s ready to leave the White House and the intense security detail that comes with it behind.
“It’s been eight years,” she added. “Eight years is enough. We’re packing up. It has been surprisingly emotional for all of us — in ways that we didn’t expect.”
In her final speech as first lady, Obama on Friday delivered a tearful goodbye that honored school counselors at the White House.
During President Obama’s farewell address in Chicago on Tuesday, Michelle and Malia Obama wiped away tears.
“She looked over at me, she says I can’t believe it, I’m going to cry through the whole speech,” Obama said of her daughter. “And I was like, that’s OK, that’s all right.”
