Trevor Noah says gender reveal parties are ‘outdated’ because children are too young to choose their gender

The host of Comedy Central’s nightly news and satire show questioned why parents have gender reveal parties when the child is not “old enough to know their actual gender.”

South African comedian Trevor Noah, who hosts the Daily Social Distancing Show, highlighted out-of-control wildfires in Big Creek, California, that were started because of a gender reveal party. Noah noted that the practice of parents celebrating the gender of their child feels “outdated” to him, “given everything we’re learning about gender.”

“Celebrating a baby’s genitalia is starting to feel very outdated,” Noah said. “Like, given everything we’re learning about gender, gender reveal parties should only happen when the child is old enough to know their actual gender.”

Riffing off the fire that has burned through more than 7,000 acres, Noah joked that if parents are going to do a gender reveal party, they should “do something that helps the situation,” such as dousing the fire in pink water if the child is a girl.

Noah’s suggestion that the parents wait until the child is old enough to select their preferred gender echoes a radical social movement that rejects traditional gender norms and promotes the acceptance of raising “theybies” or genderless children.

Noah, who took over Jon Stewart’s Daily Show in 2016, has used the platform to interview Democratic politicians, promote social justice activism, and smear President Trump and his family.
