More evacuations ordered as Hawaii volcano keeps spewing lava

Firefighters ordered more evacuations as Hawaii’s eruptions from the Kilauea volcano intensified Saturday.

Lava from the volcano moved close to homes in Leilani Estates, CNN reported, prompting firefighters to go door-to-door urging residents to leave.

“Any residents remaining in the current affected areas should evacuate now,” said an emergency message sent by the County of Hawaii Civil Defense.

A series of volcanic explosions occurred on Saturday morning, according to a tweet from USGS Volcanoes. The explosions created an ash cloud that rose up to 11,000 feet above sea level, the National Weather Service said. Since the eruptions began May 3, volcano lava has destroyed 82 structures on Hawaii’s Big Island, and another 37 structures have become inaccessible in the last days, Hawaii County Civil Defense Administrator Talmadge Magno told CNN.

President Trump recently declared a “major disaster” in Hawaii, unlocking federal aid to help with local efforts dealing with the volcano.
