Outgoing Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was honored this week with a portrait unveiling ceremony at the Capitol as she steps down from House Democratic leadership after 20 years in power.
Husband Paul Pelosi, who is recovering from a hammer attack, was in attendance at the Wednesday event, as was former House Speaker John Boehner, who kissed Nancy Pelosi on the cheek. The Ohio Republican offered a tearful tribute to the speaker, reflecting on their amicable relationship as leaders of opposing parties and her legacy as the first female House speaker.
“Madam Speaker, I have to say, my girls told me, ‘Tell the speaker how much we admire her.’ So if you couldn’t tell, my girls are Democrats,” Boehner said while choking up. “You were so gracious to me, in fact, that sometimes it got me in trouble with my own members.”
Across the Capitol, Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (AZ) announced she is leaving the Democratic Party and registering as an independent. Sen. Josh Hawley’s (R-MO) legislation to ban the use of TikTok on government devices unanimously passed the Senate. And lawmakers passed a short-term continuing resolution to avoid a government shutdown.
Outside of Washington, irate parents addressed the Loudoun County school board in Virginia after a special grand jury report said the school district had “failed at every juncture” in responding to school sexual assaults. It was the first meeting following indictments against ousted Superintendent Scott Ziegler.
Here’s a look at scenes from Washington the week of Dec. 12 captured by Washington Examiner photographer Graeme Jennings.
