ST. LOUIS (AP) — Chemical firm Sigma-Aldrich is buying Cell Marque Corp. to help strengthen its diagnostic health capabilities.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

Last month German drug company Merck agreed to buy Sigma-Aldrich for $17 billion. Sigma-Aldrich supplies chemicals and laboratory equipment to government and commercial facilities.

Cell Marque, based in Rocklin, California, makes antibody reagents and kits. It employs about 90 people.

“We expect that Cell Marque’s strong in vitro diagnostic antibody product lines and solid relationships with pathologists and companies that provide automated staining instrumentation will broaden the diagnostic health reach of Sigma-Aldrich,” Frank Wicks, president of Sigma-Aldrich’s applied business division, said in a statement.

Sigma-Aldrich Corp. said Friday that it anticipates the deal being neutral to mildly adding to its 2015 earnings per share.

The transaction is targeted to close by the end of the year.

Shares of St. Louis-based Sigma-Aldrich gained 19 cents to $135.64 in afternoon trading.
