Facebook notifications drive up voter registration in Colorado

Colorado saw a large increase in voter registration submissions after Facebook posted a notice about registering on its news feed.

The Colorado secretary of state’s office said it received just under 3,000 voter registration submissions statewide on Thursday. The Facebook alerts about voter registration became visible on Thursday night, and Colorado’s voter registration submissions spiked to 13,889 on Friday. Voter registration submissions include new registrations and updated registrations.

And the newfound interest in voter registration wasn’t limited to Colorado. Georgia’s secretary of state office reported it saw a 2,225 percent increase in online voter registration hits compared to the same day on the previous year, following the Facebook notifications.

Whether new voters registering because of such social media notifications could have a determinative impact on the election remains unclear, but Colorado and Georgia each appear to be battleground states featuring competitive contests for the presidency.
