The closing of the Monroe Street Bridge on Route 1 in Alexandria is dependent on weather conditions this week, said Kevin Hall, land development manager for the Potomac Yard project.
The bridge was expected to close this Wednesday for the next 30 months. Heavy rains Sunday night, however, prevented asphalt paving that was supposed to take place Monday in preparation for the closing.
“The asphalt plant is shut down” because of the rain, Hall said.
Potomac Yards’ developer committed $15 million toward construction of the bridge.
The company agreed to provide the money to the city in exchange for allowing the development of Potomac Yards along Route 1.
Hall said construction on the bridge could be delayed further if the rain continues during the next few days as predicted by forecasters.
“It’s going to be on a day-to-day basis,” he said.
Hall said that only direct access to and from Slaters Lane to Route 1 would be cut off. Other portions of the bridge are expected to be open for short times.
