Montgomery County State?s Attorney Doug Gansler was overwhelmingly endorsed Thursday by Maryland?s Democratic state?s attorneys in his bid to become the next attorney general.

Elected Democratic state?s attorneys in Dorchester, Charles, Cecil, Somerset, Queen Anne?s, Howard, Talbot, Kent, Worcester, Anne Arundel and Calvert counties all pledged their support for Gansler, himself a six-year veteran of the state prosecutor?s office in Montgomery County.

Maryland has 15 Democratic state?s attorneys. Baltimore City State?s Attorney Pat Jessamy and Prince George?s State?s Attorney Glenn Ivey have endorsed Democrat Stu Simms.

“It?s important on both a political level and a personal level to be recognized by one?s peers for one?s accomplishments, and supported by one?s peers as I run for statewide office,” Gansler said.

Gansler will run against Simms, a Baltimore lawyer, and Montgomery County Council member Tom Perez in September?s primary. Simms entered the race last week after his candidacy for lieutenant governor ended with the exit of Montgomery County Executive Doug Duncan from the governor’s race.

Gansler gained statewide attention during the trials of convicted snipers Lee Boyd Malvo and John Allen Muhammad.
