NEW BRAUNFELS, Texas (AP) — A Texas animal shelter says 75 percent of its dogs have been euthanized after a deadly virus outbreak.
The Humane Society of New Braunfels director said Tuesday the dogs were infected with distemper. The virus attacks the respiratory and central nervous systems of animals.
Officials have not released the exact number of dogs that died over the weekend.
The director says the virus came from a dog whose owner refused a veterinarian’s advice to euthanize the animal. She says the dog was later brought to the shelter as a stray.
The director says the remaining animals have tested negative for the disease and have been moved outside. The dogs will be available for adoption after a 30-day quarantine period.
She says the shelter will review its intake procedures.
