An Anne Arundel County man faces charges after allegedly shooting his girlfriend, police said.

David William Wright, 44, of Glen Burnie, was charged with attempted second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, use of a handgun in the commission of a violent crime and reckless endangerment, Anne Arundel police said.

Thursday around 11:30 p.m., police responded to the 800 block of White Avenue in Linthicum. The 59-year-old victim told police that her boyfriend had shot her.

Police believe that Wright assaulted his girlfriend after a verbal argument turned physical. The woman retrieved a handgun to defend herself, pointed it at Wright and told him to leave.

Wright then took the gun, pushed her to the floor and shot her in the lower torso.
