CHICAGO (AP) — Construction equipment is starting to take big bites out of Wrigley Field’s exterior outfield walls.
The demolition of the historic ballpark’s famous bleachers is part of a project to build a large electronic sign and six other outfield signs. Cubs spokesman Julian Green said Thursday that the affected walls won’t be rebuilt for several weeks and the ivy-covered outfield wall will not be taken down.
On Saturday the team, along with Major League Baseball Commissioner Bud Selig, took part in a ceremonial groundbreaking.
The work is part of the Cubs’ privately funded $575 million renovation project. The Cubs started the project despite a legal fight involving owners of rooftop businesses across the street. Those businesses fear their views of the field will be blocked and they have sued the city.
