RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Construction of a $54.5 million bridge spanning the James River in Richmond has hit the halfway mark.
Gov. Bob McDonnell said Monday that the first half of the new Huguenot Memorial Bridge is expected to open to traffic June 30.

The bridge’s second half is expected to open in summer 2013. The project is scheduled to be completed in October 2013.
McDonnell says the new bridge is wider and more bike- and pedestrian-friendly than the existing 62-year-old span.
Demolition of the existing bridge will be done in sections so the work doesn’t adversely affect the river.
