ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — Adjunct faculty at Albany’s College of Saint Rose have voted by a 3-to-1 margin to unionize.

Union organizer Bradley Russell, an adjunct professor, tells the Albany Times-Union (http://bit.ly/1r0Wxkh ) the faculty started a plan of action after repeatedly being denied raises in pay. They’re working with Adjunct Action, a project of Service Employees International Union.
Adjunct professors are part-timers who earn about $4,800 a semester for teaching two courses at Saint Rose. They have no offices or any guarantee their classes will be offered the following semester.
SEIU is also trying to organize adjuncts at colleges elsewhere, including Marist College in Poughkeepsie.
Newly named Saint Rose President Carolyn Stefanco said college leadership would rather work directly with adjunct faculty than through a union.
