BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) — Buffalo’s Delaware Park has made the American Planning Association’s 2014 list of the 10 Great Public Spaces.
The designation announced Wednesday recognizes thoughtful planning by residents, community leaders and planners.
Delaware Park, occupying 350 acres in Buffalo, was designed by landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted in 1870. It has been home to the Buffalo Zoo since 1875 and in 1901 was the site of the Pan-American Exposition.
While it went through a period of neglect, the park has rebounded since 2004, when the Olmsted Parks Conservancy took over funding and maintenance.
Delaware Park is the only New York location to make the Great Public Spaces list this year. Other honorees include the Cliff Walk in Newport, Rhode Island and Point State Park in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
