Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell told reporters in a press conference Tuesday that the state’s worst earthquake in more than a century apparently caused no major structural damage.
“There could be some damage that is just not detected yet,” the governor said. “We’re going to do everything we can to stay on top of this.”
Emergency officials said state inspectors are now scouring buildings and bridges to make sure the quake did not crack foundations or supports.
Near the quake’s epicenter, Louisa middle school and high school suffered some damage, officials said, and authorities are still considering whether to put up emergency operation shelters.
Virginians were voting Tuesday in state and local elections, and the quake closed some polling places for about 30 minutes, McDonnell said. Polls reopened and will remain open until 7 p.m.
