Most think race relations are getting worse under Trump

Most U.S. voters think race relations in the U.S. have gotten worse with President Trump in the White House, according to a new Politico/Morning Consult poll.

The poll said 55 percent of voters think things are worse, and only 16 percent think things are improving.

The poll said 79 percent of black voters think race relations are worsening, along with 60 percent of Hispanic voters. Even among white voters, a majority, 51 percent, agree that things are worse under Trump.

Republicans and Democrats were split wildly on the question, as 82 percent of Democrats said the situation is worse under Trump, and only 25 percent of Republicans agreed.

The poll was conducted a year after white supremacist demonstrations clashed with counter protesters in Charlottesville, Va., over the planned removal of a Robert E. Lee statue in a public park.

A 32-year-old woman, who was part of the counterprotest, was killed, and more than a dozen others were injured when a car plowed into a group of people as the demonstrations turned to riots.

Trump’s response to the unrest in Charlottesville drew criticism, especially from Democrats, when he said that there were “fine people” involved on both sides and “blame on both sides.”

Morning Consult polled almost 2,000 registered voters and the results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.
