President Obama will hit the campaign trail with Hillary Clinton sometime after the July Fourth weekend.
Obama will campaign with the presumptive Democratic nominee on Tuesday, July 5, in Charlotte, N.C. A statement from the Clinton campaign said Obama and Clinton will discuss the progress that’s been made and their vision for America’s future.
The announcement comes less than 24 hours after White House spokesman Josh Earnest hinted that the duo’s campaign debut was imminent.
They had to scrap their original plan to stump in Green Bay, Wis., because of the mass terrorist shooting in Orlando, Fla., June 12.
“President Obama and Secretary Clinton have rather busy schedules; but hopefully we’ll have some news on that rescheduled event quite soon,” Earnest said on Tuesday.
“You have to talk the Secretary Clinton and her team about exactly what’s on their schedule,” he clarified. “Obviously we can’t do it tomorrow because the president is meeting with the leaders of Canada and Mexico. The president had the Global Entrepreneurship Summit on the West Coast last week. So there are constraints given their schedule. But I would anticipate that we’ll have some news on this relatively soon.”
Clinton and Obama are squeezing the event in between the president’s busy international travel schedule.
In addition to his day trip to Canada on Wednesday, Obama heads to Poland and Spain July 7.
North Carolina could become a battleground state in November and is one Obama lost in 2012 to then-GOP nominee Mitt Romney. Obama’s decision to campaign with her before the convention suggests he intends to play an increasingly prominent role in the 2016 election.
