LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — A recently elected West Texas state senator is comparing what he calls a “spiritual battle” taking place in the United States to the Holocaust.

The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/10l1vNQ ) Charles Perry made the comparison after being sworn in on Tuesday.

Perry said in his inaugural speech that while he’ll work to address the state’s financial needs, his biggest concern will be the “spiritual battle for the spirit of this nation and the soul of its people.”

Perry will represent District 28, the largest in Texas, comprised of 51 counties stretching from Junction to Childress and Lubbock.

He is replacing longtime state Sen. Robert Duncan, who resigned to become chancellor of the Texas Tech University System.

Perry, a former state representative, won the seat earlier this month during a special election.
