A Stanford University theatrical production is requiring a group of student performers at a football pep rally whose sole role is to run across the stage in the nude to wear masks.
The “naked run” is part of the school’s century-old “Gaieties” tradition in which the university’s Ram’s Head Theatrical Society holds a performance as a sort of pep rally ahead of the Stanford-University of California, Berkeley, football game.

A column in the Stanford Review described the tradition as “a crowd of student streakers [running] out in their birthday suits for a few chaotic, glorious moments.”
According to the column, the producers of the production told students participating in the naked run to wear “whatever makes you comfortable” but “you’re required to wear a face mask that covers both your nose and your mouth.”

The theater is operating at two-thirds capacity for the Gaieties and requires masks for all attendees despite the university having a 95% vaccination rate among students, faculty, and staff.
