Study: Maryland among top 5 ‘new economy’ states

Maryland is among five U.S. states leading the country in its transformation into a knowledge-based economy, according to a study released Tuesday by the Washington, D.C.-based Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation and the Information Technology and Innovation Foundation.

Along with Massachusetts, Washington, Delaware and New Jersey, researchers said Maryland has a high concentration of managers, professionals and college-educated residents working in “knowledge jobs,” those that require at least a two-year degree.

“The new economy is creating profound, irreversible changes in the U.S. economic structure at a pace we would not have imagined even a decade ago,” Robert Litan, Kauffman Foundation vice president of research and policy, said in a statement.

The Johns Hopkins University’s Applied Physics Laboratory has earned the Howard Technology Council’s first Technology Company of the Year Award, the lab said Monday.

A nonprofit research and development division of Johns Hopkins, APL is Howard County’s largest private employer with 4,300 scientists, engineers and other staff. The lab works on national issues including security, space science and homeland protection.

“APL is the premier technology generator in Howard County,” Richard Story, chief executive officer of the Howard County Economic Development Authority, said in a statement. “It is a unique national treasure and intellectual powerhouse, and our community is greatly enhanced by its presence.”

Sadowski named Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore president

J. Thomas Sadowski has been named president and chief executive officer of the Economic Alliance of Greater Baltimore, the city’s economic development marketing organization, its board of directors announced Tuesday.

Sadowski had been interim president and CEO of the organization since July, when Christian Johansson stepped down from those positions. Sadowski joined the Economic Alliance as executive vice president in 2006.

“Although we considered a number of highly qualified candidates, it was obvious from the start that Tom was the right choice to continue our efforts to build the Alliance as a valued and vital player in enhancing economic development in Greater Baltimore,” Laura Gamble, alliance chairwoman and president of Bank of America Maryland, said in a statement.
